My favourite MATHS FILMS

Hello and welcome to my blog!

This post is one that I have been aiming to write since I started this blog last summer.

Although I usually prefer reading books, there are some good maths-related films that you shouldn’t miss, whether you study maths or not!

My top-five, in no particular order, are as follows:

1.Hidden figures: The_official_poster_for_the_film_Hidden_Figures,_2016

Hidden Figures is a 2016 American biographical drama film directed by Theodore Melfiand written by Melfi and Allison Schroeder, based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly about black female mathematicians who worked at the NASA during the Space Race.

The film stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who calculated flight trajectories for Project Mercury and other missions.

2. The man who knew infinity. (This one is set on Cambridge!)

The Man Who Knew Infinity is a 2015 British biographical drama film about the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, based on the 1991 book of the same name by Robert Kanigel. The Man Who Knew Infinity (film).jpg

The film stars Dev Patel as Srinivasa Ramanujan, a real-life mathematician who after growing up poor in Madras, India, earns admittance to Cambridge University during World War I, where he becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories with the guidance of his professor, G. H. Hardy, portrayed by Jeremy Irons.

Filming began in August 2014 at Trinity College, Cambridge.

3.A beautiful mindA Beautiful Mind Poster.jpg

A Beautiful Mind is a 2001 American biographical drama film based on the life of John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics. The film was directed by Ron Howard, from a screenplay written by Akiva Goldsman. It was inspired by a bestselling, Pulitzer Prize-nominated 1998 book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar. The story begins in Nash’s days as a graduate mathematics student at Princeton University. Early in the film, Nash begins to develop paranoid schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes while painfully watching the loss and burden his condition brings on wife Alicia and friends.

4.The Theory of everything. (Cambridge based too!) –You knew I was going to pick this one-.

The Theory of Everything (2014).jpg

The Theory of Everything is a 2014 British biographical romantic drama film which is set at Cambridge University and details the life of the theoretical physicist Prof. Stephen Hawking. It was directed by James Marsh, and adapted by Anthony McCarten from the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen by Jane Hawking, which deals with her relationship with her ex-husband, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and his success in Physics.

5. The imitation game (Alan Turing studied at Cambridge too!)

The Imitation Game (2014).pngThe Imitation Game is a 2014 American historical drama film directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Graham Moore, loosely based on the biography Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges.

It stars Benedict Cumberbatch as real-life British cryptanalyst Alan Turing, who decrypted German intelligence codes for the British government during the Second World War.

  1. Hi, I am also a mathematics lover and also enjoy watching movies that speak mathematics in some sense. You may watch the movie “A Brilliant Young Mind (X+Y)” if you haven’t watched it yet. I found it quite interesting and thus recommend it.
PS : You could also see my blog (especially the page on Mathematical Resources) as it is also related to mathematics (but it is new as I recently created it, so you’ll find more stuff later) 🙂

    1. Hi! I haven’t watched but I will! Will check your blog as well. Thank you for the suggestions
