I have been happily busy so far in 2023.
academic updates
The first paper of my PhD will be published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology.
It got accepted only a couple of days after I gave a (Flash) Talk about it at the Annual Symposium from Cambridge Infectious Diseases. Earlier this year, I also presented my work at a JUNIPER seminar.
I have been happy without using Twitter after the exodus of scientists. Mastodon is ok but it is not my cup of tea. I have not really used it, and I don’t think I will. Maybe I should get TikTok?
On a serious note, I’ve kept learning fascinating maths and science. I’ve also been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to follow up on the paper, so hopefully many more will come. And no sign of second-year PhD blues so far…
The biggest difficulty with this first paper was writing it. I thought that this website would be a great way to practice writing. There is some truth to that. However, this has meant higher writing standards for my posts here. At the same time, editing blog posts is at the bottom of my priority list…
Personal updates
In concordance with my current personal/social life, this paragraph is all about rowing, so skip it if you want. Lent Term was highly successful for the women’s side at King’s. We got blades in Lent bumps, despite much drama. Our Lents campaign had started well with a win (my first!) in our division of Winter Head to Head in the Cam. I also got to race at Henley(-on-Thames) and the Tideaway (in London), both for the first time. I learnt a lot technically about rowing last term, and my 2k decreased by seven seconds. I’ve also learnt the hard way that if I’m training twice a day, I need a rest day each week. (I am writing this on a rest day.)
Outside of rowing, I got Settled Status. This means I am not getting quicked out of the UK any time soon! It has also meant a new addition to my Anki decks: The Life in the UK Test.
On more exciting international news, my parents moved to Mexico City! My father got offered a job there and my mother retired(!) to follow him there. (My brother remains studying and living in Madrid.) This of course means exciting summer plans, and don’t get me started on the benefits of training at altitude…
