About & Contact

Since October 1st 2025, I have been a postdoctoral research associate at the Rohani Lab in the University of Georgia (UGA). I am studying the ecology and evolution of influenza viruses.

Before that, I was a PhD student at Cambridge University’s DAMTP, supervised by Prof. Julia Gog OBE. My thesis is available here. My PhD was funded by a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and I was part of King’s College (where Alan Turing studied). I also did my mathematics master (Part III) and my undergrad at Cambridge, as a member of Christ’s College (where Charles Darwin studied).

Potentially useful links: overview of my research interests, my CV, my orcID and Google Scholar page. My email is mag84 “at” cam.ac.uk gutierrez “at” uga.edu

The best ways to stay up to date with my research are to follow my Google Scholar or check the home/news page of the website. I publish as “Maria A. Gutierrez”. My middle name (Alegria) means “joy” in Spanish (I am a Spanish-British dual citizen).

I have given several maths/physics/outreach/bio talks. You can find them here, along with more proper research seminars. I also share my experience and advice on navigating academia on my Youtube channel.

This website was created in the summer of 2017, just before I started university. I used to blog here about my personal life and university experience. A selection of that content is still available online here. I still occasionally write newsletter-style posts there. (You can subscribe with your email in the black banner at the bottom.)
